Dr. Cragin Shelton
Systems Security Engineer
Dr. Cragin Shelton worked in national security for over 45 years. Educated as a scientist and trained in military intelligence and financial management, he worked with U.S. government information systems from 1981 to 2018. Retiring from the Air Force as a colonel in 1997, he moved into a civilian role. As a systems security engineer his work focuses on applying the principles of systems engineering to information security, with particular attention to human factors. Formally retired, he remains active through academic and professional society activities. Spreading formal education across his career, Shelton completed his chemistry bachelor’s at 20, systems management master’s in his mid-30s, and cybersecurity doctorate in his mid-60s. He has been certified in information systems security (CISSP) since 2002. A Senior Member of IEEE and ISSA, he is also a member of INCOSE and the Computer Society.
